The pain and stiffness you feel in your feet and ankles as you grow older could be arthritis. If left untreated, this nagging pain can grow worse, eventually becoming so excruciating that you can no longer walk even short distances. Severe arthritis can restrict your mobility and limit your quality of life, but with proper treatment, you can slow the development of arthritis and lead a more productive life.
Arthritis may occur in your back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders or hands, but it also occurs in your feet and ankles. Almost half of people in their 60s and 70s have arthritis of the foot and/or ankle that may not cause symptoms. There are many different types of arthritis. The most common type, osteoarthritis (OSS-tee-oh-ar-THRI-tiss), results from the "wear and tear" damage to joint cartilage (the soft tissue between joint bones) that comes with age. The result is inflammation, redness, swelling and pain in the joint. Also, a sudden and traumatic injury such as a broken bone, torn ligament or moderate ankle sprain can cause the injured joint to become arthritic in the future. Sometimes a traumatic injury will result in arthritis in the injured joint even though the joint received proper medical care at the time of injury. At the Podiatrist Northwestern Indiana Friendly Foot Care we provide our patients with quality care in both foot and ankle care; between the highly competent staff. One instance is dealing with nerve problems which would include burning, numbness and neuropathy. We use techniques that will alleviate burning, numbness, shooting pain and tingling all at once- these techniques are the result of great hands on experience with the doctor who originally developed them. There are very few doctors who typically handle neuropathy or nerve problems by using techniques. Anyone who experiences shooting pain, abnormal sensations in their ankles or feet along with burning could have a pinched never or suffer from neuropathy. Alleviating such problems is something that we as podiatrists in Northwestern Indiana thoroughly specialize in. Heels are typically something that have been given a bad rep in both the medical and the literary world; the Achilles heel refers to the fatal flaw or the thoroughly weak part of one’s body; this holds true as a our heels can often malfunction or suffer from a number of problems. This could be due to pinched nerves, stress fracture or even tumors or bone cysts; as such our Podiatrists at Northwestern Indiana can help you deal with the plantar fascia or the inflammation of the largest ligament in one’s foot . It is important that you have doctors who are aware of such medical concerns and are equipped to deal with it. We will use a hi-tech camera which is known as an endoscopic camera that can enter the heel through a very tiny opening and then use a small surgical implement to get at the root of the problem and help you heal!
