A bunionette is often called “Tailor’s Bunion” because the way tailors used to sit working cross legged caused excess pressure on one side of their feet. The lateral end of the fifth toe gained an unsightly bump that made movement painful. Today, a bunionette may occur because you are accustomed to wearing narrow shoes. As a result, increased pressure on the metatarsophalangeal joint produces a protuberance that just gets worse overtime.
So, podiatrist Crown Point suggests you not delay treatment if you notice an unusual bump on the outer side of your fifth. It may seem like it’s not a big deal but the problem will increase in severity without the proper examination and treatment. Your foot may start to splay making it difficult to find a shoe design that agrees with your deformation. Special shoes are prescribed by podiatrists to help lessen the discomfort of a bunionette. The first course of action is to check how far gone your metatarsophalangeal joint and whether there has been any splaying on account of the abnormal pressure it has been subjected to for long periods of time. Custom made pads or inserts are also helpful in reducing pain because they offer padding to the damaged metatarsophalangeal joint. Surgery may be required if the state of the bunionette is serious. Usually, a small incision is made to remove minor sections of the bone and soft tissue comprising the buinionette. Removing these protruding parts might not be enough however. If the fifth toe’s bone has become curved due to the excess pressure, then it is realigned to end the splaying form of the foot. Bunionette surgery demands significant care following the operation with a strict restriction on placing pressure on the foot. In addition, thick wooden soled shoes may be prescribed by your podiatrist.
